Strangers, babies (Theater Class) - Essay Example The director’s intent is to highlight the difficulty that people experience when attempting to relate to loved ones, especially with knowledge of their past mistakes and potential weaknesses. The director playwright and director chose an appropriate time to highlight this relationship deficiency, given the fact that the contemporary society is largely characterized by family disconnect and widespread disintegration of the family unit. This play attempts to show that people, have an individual burden, which is the lack of ability to understand how they associate with others, but still be responsible for pieces of information about their life experiences. Discussion The first scene of Strangers, Babies, begins with May steadily looking at the corner of the square shaped stage. The conversation, between May and her husband Dan, suggests that the direction to which she is staring is the couple’s apartment balcony. There is an injured bird and May seems concerned and willing to help it, as shown when she states that things can stay alive although they are injured. The presence of birds in the perceived balcony is indicated by high-pitched chirping sounds, which can be heard throughout this first scene. However, it is peculiar that although May is adamant about helping the bird, she is still reluctant to get involved. This serves to show that the protagonist is obsessive but distant at the same time. Dan looks at the balcony and occasionally at May in a knowing yet patronizing manner. He attempts to convince his wife that even though putting up a bird feeder on the balcony would be a caring gesture, it attracts more birds and there is a likelihood of getting additional injured birds. His patronizing attitude becomes evident when he uses a sarcastic tone to state that turning the balcony into a sanctuary for birds, would prevent him from engaging in his usual Sunday daydreaming involving newspaper reading and coffee drinking. It is obvious that there is affection between the two, but there is also an unsettling sensation. This is evident from May’s nearly desperate fixation on the injured bird and her apparent agitation as she slightly bangs her mug on the table, while her husband observes in a grave and sober manner. This scene provides a typical example of the atmosphere prevalent throughout the play, which constitutes disguised violence, careless attitude and ordinary daily life. From the play’s outset, the stage set-up evokes a feeling of disconnection. The stage is an ordinary square platform, which has a dividing space in between and high walls on either side. The director adds a dramatic effect to the play by concluding every scene with an abrupt and loud clang. This is followed by the rising of the back wall, in order to show the four other characters, who execute the subsequent scene change in a somber manner. Even though they are not explicitly mentioned, disturbing events in the protagonist’s past su ggest the possibility that, May’s current life is a sign of their impact. For instance, her monologue and distant look in the first scene makes one think that she is in deep thought about being injured in the past. From this and throughout the whole book we can see that Mama is a very caring woman, but she does believe that people should take things as they come and get on with their lives, even if it means having to live with the violence and hatred towards the blacks from the whites. The second incident that I am going to write about is in chapter eight where Mama is fired from her job as a teacher. In this episode, Mama is giving a lesson about slavery when Mr Wallace and Mr Granger walk in and say that they, Been hearing bout your teaching, Mary, so as members of the board we thought wed come by and learn something. When they walk in Mama is teaching a lesson in history. The unlucky thing is that she is teaching the history of slavery. She speaks about how cruel slavery is and how the country profited from the slaves who were paid nothing and still not free. Then Mr Granger sees the books that Mama has pasted over and acknowledges that all the things Mama is teaching are not in the books. Mama says that she cannot teach what is in that book because, All that is in that book is not true. After this remark, Mr Granger tells her that she would be better off not teaching if she cannot teach what is in the book. This storyline probably originates from Mildred Taylor herself because as mentioned earlier, she says she used to hate the history of blacks at school because she felt that it was all completely false. I dont think that Mr Granger and Kaleb Wallace would have been so willing to lose a good teacher such as Mary Logan because of her views if she hadnt been black. It shows what the whites thought of the blacks having their own view on things. It also confirms the suspicion that the Whites always thought that they were right and that was the end of it. Because Mama loses her job, it puts an even bigger stress on the Logan family because they have an even smaller income. Papas reaction to the news of Mamas unemployment is, Well get by Plant some more cotton maybe. But well get by. From this I think it means that he was worried but didnt want Mama to feel bad because he also believed in what she had been teaching. During this episode, even Mamas boss Mr Wellever doesnt stick up for her, because he is too petrified to stand up for what he believes. This shows how much power the whites had over the blacks and also that the blacks rights to stand up for themselves and be able to say what they wanted to were completely dismissed because they knew what the consequences would be if they didnt do as the whites told them too. Teaching in the 1930s was very different to teaching now especially in the southern states of America. It used to be illegal for blacks to go to school and there were many illegal black schools taking place in peoples houses. Two other options were to have home schooling, which was quite hard if your parents were not very intelligent or to have education at your local church. In 1866 it became legal in the northern states for blacks to go to school with whites but in the southern states such as Mississippi, where Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, is set there were separate schools for blacks and whites. The black schools were over-crowded and poorly equipped compared to the white school. We see this in the book when the black children at Great Faith are handed down books that were in some cases eleven years old and were given to the white children first. The slave trade was authoritatively abolished in 1807, but the Southern states of America continued to trade the slaves illegally. Effects were so bad that stud farms were set up where the most clever/strong humans were used to produce the model slave. In 1861-85, the American Civil War took place where the Northern States of American battled against the Southern states. The North won and finally put an end to the slavery trade in the Southern states. At this time large numbers of blacks left the South and headed for the North knowing that there was not as much poverty and chaos there. Even so, many blacks were left behind. As we see in Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, slavery was a very big issue. There was a short phase where the blacks and whites tried to make peace with each other but it didnt work and soon the Northern states allowed the south to begin slavery once again. The North didnt help the newly freed slaves to protect their rights and let them have their freedom once again. Before I first began to read Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry I had no idea how much I would learn about racism. To me that word just meant when people made cruel jokes about blacks, but I didnt realise just how badly the blacks were treated at the beginning of last century and before that. I think that the book is very interesting to read when you have never thought about racism properly before and also very interesting when you already know about these subjects. I think that the incidents I have described definitely describe the persecution of the blacks. After reading Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, I am undeniably thankful that these sorts of acts do not still go on today and I hope that they never will. The key factors of scientific management Scientific management is the study of a job and identifying the best way to do the job. Appropriate workers are selected and training are provided to them, so that the performance of individual worker is enhanced, leading to improved efficiency of the firm (Davidson, P., Griffic, R.W Erica, F. 2003). Frederic W. Taylor did the first study of scientific management. He is known as the father of scientific management for his findings in the field of management. Scientific management emerged in 19th century, but still today, large number of companies practice scientific management. Scientific management is widely used in assembly lines and in fast food outlets (Davidson, P. and Griffic, R.W. 2003). In the following essay I have analyzed the how scientific management is applied in the New Zealand based Fletcher Building limited. The company is one of the largest commercial employers of (200,000 workers world wide, with 9000 New Zealand workers) the New Zealand, the organizations operatio ns range from construction, manufacturing and sales of products related to construction. Fletcher building not only operates in New Zealand but also in other countries (Fletchers Building, 2008). The key factors of scientific management are discussed one by one in the following paragraphs with examples for each of key points from Fletcher Building. Followed by the conclusion. The first step of scientific management is to find a standardized method to do a particular job. This involves dividing a complex task into large number of small tasks, each task done by an individual (Samson, D Daft, R.L., 2005). Individual jobs are scientifically analyzed and the best way to the job is identified. As a result, the old rule of thumb is replaced by a more efficient method. However, workers are treated more like robots. Uniformity and repetition of the same task leads to boredom and frustration among workers. In addition to that, skills of labour are lost as multi skilled employees are forced to do only a small part of a complex job; leading to lose of pride in the work, they do. Another set back of scientific management is individual ideas of workers are ignored (Davidson, P., Griffic, R.W Erica, F. 2003). Fletcher Building also successfully implemented standardization in their business activities. All the workers are given specific jobs. Due to this, employees of the company have more understanding in one particular field. This can be seen all over the company. For example, machine operators in Pacific Steel division (New Zealand Steel maker) or a truck driver who works on construction sites of the company. They specialize in their own field, which leads to improvement in the output in all areas of the company. Identifying the best practice for a task is the first step of scientific management. Followed by selecting workers who are appropriate to do the job (Robbins, Belgman, Staga Coultec 2003). In the past workers are selected to jobs without considering whether their skills and abilities. The right person for the right job is needed. Each and every worker tends to have different skills and interests. Under scientific management, suitable workers who match their skills to the task are selected (Samson, D Daft, R.L., 2005). It is the managers job to find the right person with the matching abilities and skill to a particular job. Or else if an inappropriate worker were selected the efficiency and effectives of the company and the rest of workers, whose work are related with the inefficient worker will fall. In Fletchers Building, applicants for a job under-go various procedures to check whether their skills and experience are at the level to perform the task associated with the job. As a result, the most suitable workers are selected for various jobs of the company. The third stage of scientific management is to train workers to their job (Samson, D Daft, R.L., 2005). Employees are trained in the accordance with the best way to do the job. The worker may have knowledge of how to perform the task that s/he was selected for. Previously workers select their own ways to do the job. However, the company needs to train them according to their findings in step one, which is the efficient way to do that task. This training must be ongoing if the managers find a better way to do the job than the previous one. It is the managers duty to keep the training up to date (Davidson, P., Griffic, R.W Erica, F. 2003). Training workers is one of the priorities of Fletcher Building limited. Training is brought down from the top of the companys hierarchy as an important part to be the market leader in todays competitive market (Jayne V. 2007 July). New employees are given training to teach them how to perform the task according to the companys procedure. In scienti fic management, workers are trained only in one way to do the job. However in Fletcher Building Limited workers are trained in according to the need of the company, not only in a simple task. This not only helps to react to the consumer needs, but also this enables the company to face competition in the dynamic market. A well-trained work force is more flexible to adjust to new ways. The next key factor of scientific management is providing support to workers and helping them to plan their work so that interruptions are eliminations or minimized (Samson, D Daft, R.L., 2005). Taylor considered that its managers duty to plan the work and to eliminate any bottle necks in the work. Workers and managers are equal at work. Managers plan and organize work so that interruptions and bottlenecks are eliminated, while workers are the person who actually does the work (Davidson, P., Griffic, R.W Erica, F. 2003). In Fletcher Building, workers are encouraged to discuss any problems associated in their work with higher ups. Moreover, employees are free to submit any ideas to the company. This helps managers to identify any difficulties associated with the work. One of the key factors in supporting the employees is motivating them in the work. Fletcher Building has various schemes to motivate the workers. For example, they have gym facilities in some of the company work sites and provide discount card for those workers who work in a site which doesnt have a gym facility (Leveson, V 2008). This enable worker to be more involved in their jobs and motivates them. The last character of scientific management is performance based wage incentive. Earlier workers tend to work at a slower pace as they get the same salary as others (Samson, D Daft, R.L., 2005). In scientific management, workers are paid according to the output they produce. This led to employees increasing their output to earn more money. As a result, the worker who is efficient produces and earns more. Money is one of the key factors, which attract workers to work more. In piece rate system or performance, based payment workers who produce more are paid extra and those who meet a certain level of output get a bonus. However, this approach tends to treat workers as they are only motivated by money. This approach ignores social and higher requirements of workforce (Samson, D Daft, R.L., 2005). On the other hand, in Fletcher Building Limited workers are paid a set value of wage. However not the only benefit which they get from working for the company .In order to further motivate th e workers, the company provides various benefits. For example discounts cards for workers on their wide range of products (Leveson, V 2008) The main focus of this essay is the implementation of five elements of scientific management in Fletcher Building Limited. The five elements are one best way of doing the job, selecting appropriate workers, providing training according to the best way to do the job, supporting workers to eliminate bottlenecks and paying a performance based wage to boost their performance. Fletcher Building limited implemented most of the factors of scientific management to some extent. Some factors of scientific management have been applied more than others have. Scientific management has played a major role in the running of Fletcher Building Limited and it will continue in the future. Scientific management not only affected the operations of Fletcher Building limited but also in many organizations all over the world. Even though this was established in 19th century still many companies use scientific management in their business day-to-day tasks.

Kraft Foods, High Performance Work Systems (HPWS) Essay -- Case Study

In 1995, Kraft was created through the reorganization and merger of J. L. Kraft, Oscar Meyer, and C. W. Post into one operating company. For the reorganization the Operations Division chose to use the High Performance Work Systems (HPWS) change management tool because they believed it was the best way to include all of the necessary elements that would contribute to the vision of undisputed leadership. They also liked the HPWS tool because of its strict structure and because it was a good platform to create and communicate a consistent management philosophy. HPWS allowed them to monitor all of their plants, new and old, for efficiency and effectiveness of the reorganization. Strengths of the Change Intervention Kraft Foods, Inc. approached their change initiative by researching and testing before implementing. The High Performance Work Systems (HPWS) was first implemented into three start-up plants. The HPWS method was successful and adopted by the new plants. HPWS helps determine factors such as total inventory, cost of production, and measurement of productivity. Once the HPWS method proved to be successful it was then implemented into the existing plants to help gain control of costs, waste, and productivity. Kraft was able to provide quality examples to the existing plants of how this method improved productivity and profits. Employees were able to embrace the change plan easier when they could actually see the possible improvements. Kraft had a bonus because the employees were able to see the method working in similar situations, which helped build trust and acceptance in the change plan. This method also empowered the employees giving them an opportunity to increase their skill levels and an opportuni... ...ecause of the communication tools provided through HPWS. â€Å"By consistently applying the tools across Operations, Kraft was assured that people and work systems were aligned† (Carter et al, p.37). An Analysis of To His Coy Mistress :: To His Coy Mistress, Andrew Marvell

The poem, To His Coy Mistress, by Andrew Marvell brings out some actions that some of us have experienced or even thought about in this concise poem.   This poem is very appealing to the male senses and what some make are like.   Some women could be thought of when this is read. Andrew Marvell puts it in words that make it seem as if it was very acceptable.   The first twenty lines of the poem start to talk about how much this girl means to this perticular man.   The main character in the poem talks about how he will wait forever to be with her.   He mentions that â€Å"We would sit down and think which way To walk and pass our long love’s day.† (st. 3-4)   His views as of now are that he wants to take his time and he doesn’t have go anywhere.   This man certainly wants to plan things out so that it will be perfect.  Ã‚   Another line from the poem that makes him the gentleman that he is portraying to be is â€Å"An hundred years should go to praise Thine eyes and on thy forehead gaze. â€Å"(st.13-14)   I think he is saying that we will give praise to her eyes that are so magnificent.   Her eyes are so beautiful, because of which he will praise them for hundred years before they can truly be together.   Later on it mentions that he will praise her breast each for two hundred years.   The mood is set that this man certainly wants to be with this woman.   He is telling her how he feels and wants her to understand that he really wants to be with her.      Ã‚  Ã‚   In the next twelve lines we begin to see a bit of difference in the attitude.   As of now the guy is thinking, well maybe we don’t have enough time to sit around and wait.   The chariot’s of time is pointed out   by saying that it is hurrying near.   Maybe we don’t have enough time anymore.   We should hurry up and get with it.   â€Å"Thy beauty shall no more be found, Nor, in thy marble vault shall sound.†(st. 25-26)   I imagine that he is telling her that if we wait to long then you shall be dead and then we would have never gotten the chance.   He is trying to tell her that they should hurry it up.

Ethics in Healthcare Essay

Healthcare is a diverse field with many specialties, but a commonality in all aspects is provider’s ethics. Ethics means following the standards and guidelines set by institutions as it relates to job duties, professional behavior, and patients. The decisions made by healthcare professionals, be it physicians, nurses or medical staff, affect real people and may mean the difference between life and death. The health and welfare of patients, along with the very serious aspect of treatment facilitation, requires that ethical standards be followed every step of the way for the health care professional. Following ethic issues will give us a comprehensive view of what it means and how it applies to the healthcare industry. Healthcare professionals follow ethics from how medical guidelines are set, how ethics can become legal issues, and ethical effects on patience. Setting of Guidelines The settings of guidelines differ from facility to facility, but the core values are the same. â€Å"Guidelines are usually produced at national or international levels by medical associations or governmental bodies, such as the US Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Local healthcare providers may produce their own set of guidelines or adapt them from existing top-level guidelines.† (Guidelines & recommendations, n.d.) â€Å"Clinical practice guidelines are systematically developed statements to assist practitioner and patient decisions about appropriate health care for specific clinical circumstances.† (Institute of Medicine, 1990). Such documents have been in use for thousands of years during the entire history of medicine. (Wikipedia) Clinical protocol is a predefined written  procedural method in the design and implementation of experiments.† Protocols are written whenever it is desirable to standardize a laboratory method to ensure successful replication of results by others in the same laboratory or by other laboratories. Detailed protocols also facilitate the assessment of results through peer review. In addition to detailed procedures and lists of required equipment and instruments, protocols often include information on safety precautions, the calculation of results and reporting standards, including statistical analysis and rules for predefining and documenting excluded data to avoid bias.†(Wikipedia) All aspects of guidelines all have a form of ethics that follow. Ethics Groups There are many different ethics groups in healthcare. Ethics groups improve patient care and the health of the public by examining and promoting physician professionalism. The Ethics groups are organized into three parts: as stated by (AMA) Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs (CEJA), which promotes adherence to the professional ethical standards set out in the Code through its judicial function, Ethics Resource Center, which provides students and physicians with the essential tools and skills to address ethical challenges in a changing health care environment, and the Institute for Ethics which is an academic research center uniquely situated in the nation’s largest professional association of physicians. All these different groups listed above, promote ethics in healthcare. Another ethic that effect patients is the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA). As stated by (AMA) â€Å"Created in 1996 (HIPPA) provides the ability to transfer and continue he alth insurance coverage for millions of American workers and their families when they change or lose their jobs; Reduces health care fraud and abuse; mandates industry-wide standards for health care information on electronic billing and other processes; and requires the protection and confidential handling of protected health information.† So many different parts of ethics that effect patients seem never-ending but all these things are set in place to help patients, but when do these ethics go too far? When do they become legal issues? Ethics codes and policies of facilities can turn wrong fast and one person’s view change others as things go awry and it becomes a legal issue. An example of  ethics becoming a legal issue is a Texas law that says life-sustaining treatment cannot be withdrawn from a pregnant patient, regardless of her end-of-life wishes. Recently there was a Texas woman who was brain dead and pregnant. She and her husband both paramedics, between each other, did not want to be kept alive by machines in this type of situation. The hospital applied the law cited above, but is this the correct type of ethics governing hospitals? Larry Thompson, a state’s attorney arguing on behalf of the hospital stated the hospital was trying to protect the rights of the fetus as it believed Texas law instructed it to do. (Urbanski, D. 2014) Keeping a dead body alive with a fetus that had slim to no chance at life, where do ethics come in? Are ethics more of a personal belief or opinion of some? Ethical Codes Ethics codes help standardize the quality of ethics in healthcare field. The Code of Medical Ethics made by the American Medical Association (AMA) which was founded in 1847 unanimously adopted the world’s first national code of professional ethics in medicine. Since that time it has been the authoritative ethics guide for practicing physicians. â€Å"The Code articulates the enduring values of medicine as a profession. As a statement of the values to which physicians commit themselves individually and collectively, the Code is a touchstone for medicine as a professional community. It defines medicine’s integrity and the source of the profession’s authority to self-regulate.† (AMA) This code has set the guidelines for the medical industry. The Hippocratic Oath also shows how guidelines are set in medicine. Hippocratic Oath is an oath historically taken by doctors and other healthcare professionals swearing to practice medicine honestly. There have been ethical guidelines in medicine a long time, the â€Å"Hippocratic oath was written in 5th century BC.† (Tyson, 2001) Such documents have been in use for thousands of years during the entire history of medicine. Each medical facility has their own ethical guidelines to follow and it plays an important role in healthcare and plays a role on patients. The last code is the National Association for Healthcare Quality (NAHQ). NAHQ’s (2011) Maintains active personal and professional development programs in the field of healthcare quality and exhibits a broad range of knowledge creates and supports an environment that fosters teamwork, emphasizes quality,  recognizes the customer, and promotes learning maintains a commitment to the improvement of the professional through participation in, and active support of, the local, state, and national professional organizations addresses concerns and takes formal actions to resolve or report the unethical or questionable practices to the appropriate channels. (Code of Ethics for Healthcare Quality Professionals, n.d.) Conclusion In summary, ethics have effects on how medical guidelines are set, how ethics can become legal issues, and ethical effects on patients. Every part of healthcare ethics plays an important role in the process. Decisions of facilities, providers, and patients are all impacted by ethics. Medical professionals must follow ethical guidelines and be aware of legal issues, and ethical effects on patience.
